THE PANDEMIC THAT SAVED YOU

Last year, when I asked my daughter, Sophia, her thoughts about the annual Colon Cancer Awareness Campaign, and she suggested that we create something surrounding current events. The controversy regarding the US/Mexico border was a hot topic and without missing a beat she suggested the never-ending, debatable wall. What a unique idea, I thought, and we were extremely excited to prepare, shoot, and share this powerful message. Although it had a double meaning, the focus, of course, was to build awareness surrounding colon cancer symptoms, colonoscopies, and prevention. With a winning team who consisted of photographer James Hickey, graphic artist Victoria Fuller, and make-up artist Wen Zheng, our goal was to produce something alluring, catchy, and informative. Unfortunately, the billboard did not go up last year due to unforeseeable circumstances and although that was extremely disappointing, I chose to believe that there was a bigger reason and the universe would eventually reveal the answer as to why? Here we are, one year later, and who would have thought this message would be triple fold: WALLS, CANCER, and a PANDEMIC.

Zombie Apocalypse? The Black Plague of 2020? Armageddon? or a Vicious Virus? Well, whatever this is, we must forget the wall, forget the wars, forget the corruption, forget the greed, and find a cure for not only colon cancer but also for the coronavirus. Walls of all kinds are being constructed both figuratively and literally. They are popping up like weeds…  causing chaos, isolation, fear, despair, and death. We are now truly ONE, (we were ONE before but now it is much more noticeable) and we are collectively paying the price.

On the bright side… “what bright side?” you may ask, it is imperative that we always find a way to the bright side, otherwise, we will live in darkness, and what is the point in that?  The light is bringing people together even though we are so far apart, we are connecting on a much higher level, families are spending quality time together, old friends are face timing and zoom parties are the place to be. We are taking walks, without a cell phone in our hand, and we are slowing down because there is no need to rush. Daily, there are universal random acts of kindness, examples of selflessness, kindness, and compassion. Our souls are thriving. And then there is us, ourselves, you, me, and our own existence. It is so easy to get lost in the shuffle of day to day life and push your goals, dreams, and desires to the side, which is the gloomiest place you could put them.

Redefine, redirect, and rethink about WHO you are and WHERE you are going. WHAT is your purpose? WHY did you lose your way? HOW can you get back on your path? WHEN are you going to start the journey? NOW. Start your journey NOW.

Difficult questions? I do not think so because you already know. Take this moment in history and turn it into making your own history. You see, God, or whoever/whatever you worship, makes us STOP for a reason. We must honor this backward blessing and carpe diem because soon enough we will be back in the game and in order to avoid playing another useless hand, we must be prepared to live a purpose-driven life.

*This is dedicated to all those who have passed during COVID-19. I solemnly swear that your life has not and will not be lost in vain. I will honor your existence by fulfilling my passion and my purpose. Thank you for shining your light on us.
