Harvard graduate (cum laude) literary star, and inaugural poet, Amanda Gorman is a force of nature. Her infamous poem, “The Hill We Climb” struck a chord with Americans and people worldwide. It reminded us all of our shared humanity and ability to be better people. Let her inspiring words serve as a reminder of the potential we all hold.
On January 20, 2021, Amanda Gorman became the sixth and youngest poet, at age twenty-two, to deliver a poetry reading at a presidential inauguration. I’ve selected a few quotes from the overall piece that were especially inspiring.
1. Somehow we've weathered and witnessed
a nation that isn't broken
but simply unfinished
2. And yes we are far from polished
far from pristine
but that doesn't mean we are
striving to form a union that is perfect
We are striving to forge a union with purpose
3. It’s because being American is more than a pride we inherit,
it's the past we step into
and how we repair it
4. For while we have our eyes on the future
history has its eyes on us
5. If we merge mercy with might,
and might with right,
then love becomes our legacy
6. The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it.
